Fire-safe ball valves: API 607 standards, testing, and selection guide

In systems that carry flammable or hazardous media, a fire is one of the most serious things a valve has to survive. A fire-safe ball valve is designed to keep containing pressure and limit leakage during and after a fire, so a contained incident does not escalate. It is worth being precise about the term from the start: fire-safe is not the same as fireproof. A fire-safe valve is not immune to fire. It is engineered to maintain its pressure boundary and keep leakage within defined limits for the duration of a typical fire.

This guide explains how fire-safe ball valves work, which standards govern them, what the fire test involves, and what to weigh when you select one.

How a fire-safe ball valve works

Under normal operation, a ball valve seals on a soft, non-metallic seat, often PTFE, which gives a tight, low-torque shutoff. The problem is that soft seats degrade quickly once temperatures climb into the range of a fire. A fire-safe design answers this with a secondary seal. When the soft seat burns away, the ball is pushed against a metal seating surface in the body, forming a secondary metal-to-metal seal that continues to cut off flow. That is why fire-safe ball valves are often described as fire-safe by design.

External leakage is addressed separately. The stem and body joints are sealed with fire-resistant materials such as graphite packing and graphite gaskets, which keep sealing where an elastomer would burn. Together, the secondary metal seat and the fire-resistant external seals let the valve hold pressure through the fire.

The standards that matter

Several standards govern fire-safe valves, and knowing which one applies to your application matters.

API 607 is the most common fire test for soft-seated quarter-turn valves, which includes ball valves. It verifies that a valve can contain pressure and keep leakage within limits during and after controlled flame exposure, and it is built around proving that secondary sealing capability.

API 6FA is the standard used for valves in pipeline and wellhead service that fall under API 6A or API 6D, where operators need assurance that a valve can still be operated to shut down a line after a fire.

ISO 10497 is the international fire-test standard, and it aligns closely with the API approach. You may also see references to the older BS 6755 Part 2.

The practical point is to specify the standard that suits your service. For general industrial and process ball valves, API 607 is usually the relevant one, while pipeline and upstream applications point to API 6FA.

What the fire test involves

A fire test subjects a pressurised valve to an open flame for a set period, commonly around thirty minutes, at high temperature. During and after the burn, the test measures both internal leakage, past the seat, and external leakage, from the stem and body, and these must stay within the maximum values the standard allows. Certification means an independent, governing party has confirmed the valve meets the requirements, so it is worth insisting on genuine third-party certification rather than a general claim.

Selecting a fire-safe ball valve

Beyond the fire rating itself, a few choices shape whether a valve is right for your system. Body and trim material is the foundation: 316 or 316L stainless steel is a common choice for corrosive media, thanks to its molybdenum content and pitting resistance, while other alloys suit more aggressive or offshore service. An anti-static feature is often specified alongside fire safety, so that static charge cannot build up across the ball, stem, and body. Stem sealing through graphite packing, the pressure class and size, and the end connections all follow from your process conditions. Finally, match the valve to the application, whether that is a refinery, a petrochemical plant, a gas processing facility, or an offshore platform.
