When a system cannot tolerate contamination or the smallest leak, a standard compression fitting is not always the right answer. Face seal fittings were developed for exactly these conditions, and they are the connection of choice in ultra-high purity gas systems, semiconductor fabrication, and other demanding applications. This article explains how face seal fittings work, the main types you can choose from, the standards that matter, and where they are typically used.
What a face seal fitting is
A face seal fitting seals across the flat face of the connection rather than around the outside of a tube. Two glands are drawn together by a nut, and a seal is formed at the face between them, either by a metal gasket or by an elastomer. Because the sealing element sits at the face and the fitting has little internal entrapment, the flow path stays clean and there are fewer places for particles or contaminants to collect. Most face seal fittings are make-and-break connections, which means you can open the joint for maintenance and reseal it reliably, usually with a fresh gasket.
The main types
There are three common face seal types, and the right one depends on how demanding your purity, temperature, and media requirements are. FITOK supplies all three, which lets you match the seal to the application rather than force one design to fit every case.
The metal gasket face seal, offered as the FITOK FR series, uses a replaceable metal gasket compressed between two sealing beads to form a metal-to-metal seal. With no elastomer in the sealing path, it suits aggressive, toxic, or high-temperature media and the most purity-sensitive systems. This is the type most often specified for ultra-high purity and semiconductor work, and it is the design commonly referred to as a VCR-style connection.
The O-ring face seal, offered as the FITOK FO series, seals with an elastomer O-ring at the gland face. It is a good choice where the media and temperature allow an elastomer seal and where the absolute cleanliness of a metal-to-metal joint is not required. This is the design commonly referred to as a VCO-style connection.
The L-ring face seal, offered as the FITOK TFO series, uses a lubricant-free L-ring with reduced internal entrapment, giving a clean, serviceable seal for applications that sit between the other two.
Standards, cleanliness, and traceability
For high-purity work, how a fitting is finished and cleaned matters as much as how it seals. Surface finish is specified as an average roughness, typically around Ra 10 microinch as a standard finish, with an electropolished option of around Ra 5 microinch for ultra-high purity service. Cleaning and packaging are handled through defined processes, ranging from a standard industrial process, through a special process that meets recognised cleanliness requirements such as ASTM G93 Level C, up to a dedicated ultra-high purity process. Traceability is part of the specification too: FITOK marks each gland and body with size, material, and heat number, so you can trace what is installed in your system. When you specify a face seal fitting, it is worth confirming the surface finish, the cleaning grade, and the gasket material against your application requirements.
Where they are used
Face seal fittings are the standard for ultra-high purity gas delivery in semiconductor manufacturing, where process and specialty gases must reach the fabrication tools without contamination or leakage. Beyond semiconductors, they are used in analytical instrumentation, high vacuum systems, specialty and calibration gas panels, and hydrogen applications. In general, they suit any system where leak integrity and cleanliness are critical, and the metal gasket type in particular is chosen where an elastomer seal would not survive the media or the temperature.
Choosing the right face seal fitting
The decision comes down to matching the seal type, the gasket material, the surface finish, and the cleaning level to your system. Metal gasket fittings give you the cleanest, most robust seal for the harshest and most purity-critical service, while O-ring and L-ring designs can be the practical choice when conditions allow.
